Originating from Greek mythology, the chimera was a mythical creature synthesized from these three animals.
Artfully reinterpreted here around 1900, the pendant brooch portion exhibits a lion head, goat's horns, with the lion's head extending outward and up to morph into two opposing snake heads.
Each snake hisses with mouth agape showing tiny fangs, and the goat horns arch downward from each. The entire surface of the chimera is rendered in textured gold.
This rare jewel can be worn all together as a necklace, or as a brooch. Two spring rings release at each side of the reverse of the chimera to don as a brooch or pin. The brooch fittings also unscrew if desired when wearing as a pendant.
Weighty and created in 18k rich, deep gold, it is certainly one-of-a-kind and feels remarkably luxurious and fine.
At the top of the chains of the pendant, an amethyst cabochon decorates the gold work. Another teardrop falls below the chimera. In its open mouth rests an old European cut diamond of .07 carats. Garnets serve as deep and mysterious eyes to the fierce feline head.
